Sask Squash Board now set...

December 6, 2017

At last night's Sask Squash Board meeting, Noah Wernikowski was elected as our new President and James Stephenson as our new Vice-President. Congratulations to both as they begin their two-year terms in these leadership roles.
We also welcome Rahim Mohamed, of Saskatoon, who last night was appointed to our Board, filling the last of our ten positions - At our AGM on Nov. 18, we elected Carla Dyck, Sandra Williams, James Stephenson, David Sutherland and Michael Tomka to our Board.
Rahim plays at the YMCA Saskatoon and the University of Saskatchewan, was a highly-ranked junior squash player ages ago in Kenya (sorry, Rahim), was involved in junior squash in London, Ontario and is a director of Sask Soccer. Thanks for helping us, Rahim.

With the recent SquashHeads Unite tournament results entered into our national rankings, as well as other tournaments throughout the country, many of our Saskatchewan players have done well in improving their status.

Fresh off of last weekend's provincial championship, the Saskatchewan Open, we are making ready for the last event of our Sask Squash season. The SLIC Squash Tournament is scheduled for April 28-30 at the YMCA Saskatoon.

Tournament Chair Russ Warner has many events in this tournament including A, B, C, D, Masters (over 50 yrs. old), Junior Novice (12 yrs. old and under) and a Heavyweight event (225 lbs. +). He also hosts the Saturday night banquet at the Top of the Inn at the Sheraton Cavalier Hotel - a special event that has a Texas Hold'em poker tournament afterwards.
We are expecting between 80-100 players of all abilities.
The entry deadline is Monday, April 24.

Thomas King, # 196 in the Men's World Ranking, defended his provincial championship crown yesterday by defeating Nikki Todd, # 65 in the Women's World Ranking, 3-1.

This weekend's Saskatchewan Open tournament draw is now posted online -

We ended up with a large tournament - 81 players. Because of so many players and three courts, we needed to reduced the number of matches a bit and make smaller events.
Play starts tomorrow, Friday, March 24, at 5pm at Evolution Fitness. Good luck to all.

The online entry for our provincial squash championship, the Saskatchewan Open, Mar. 24-26, hosted by Evolution Fitness in Regina, is now open.

We annually award the Carm Moerike Spirit of Squash Award at the Saskatchewan Open squash tournament in March in Regina.
"The Carm Moerike Spirit of Squash Award is an honour annually given to an individual who embodies the spirit of Saskatchewan squash – enthusiasm, generosity, camaraderie, sportsmanship, and excellence. It is an expression of Saskatchewan Squash’s appreciation of their participation, effort, and contribution to squash in Saskatchewan."
We are looking for nominations for the 2017 award. Please send nominations to Sask Squash at by February 1, 2017. Please include a brief description of why you think the nominee is deserving of this award. Our Sask Squash Board members and staff, who are ineligible, will select this year's recipient.

2016 Saskatoon Movember Boast entry open...

The online entry for the Saskatoon Movember Boast squash tournament is now open -

The Boast is scheduled for Nov. 18-20 at the YMCA Saskatoon and includes the Professional Squash Association, PSA, $10,000 event. This includes six of the top 100 players in the world. The PSA qualifying starts on Tuesday night, Nov. 15.

Entry is $60 for the main events and Masters. $25 for Junior Novice.

U of S Tourney entries open...

Join the fun with fellow squash players in a tournament atmosphere.  Players are placed into events based on ability so matches are closer.  Open to all U of S PAC members (including students) and non-PAC squash players.  All levels of play welcomed.  Many beginners play their first tournament in this event and receive significant help from other participants.

Entry deadline is Thursday, Oct. 27, at 3 p.m.  Draw times depend on the number of entries.  First draw times available Friday at noon from PAC Room 222, 306-966-1001

This tournament is included on the Sask Squash schedule (tournament placing will be included in provincial rankings).  Become ranked in Saskatchewan. 

Please note:  All players in the PAC Fall squash tournament will be required to have a valid Saskatchewan Squash membership.  Players are required to have this at the time of the draw posting and can be purchased online for $10 at .  Simply click on the red Sign-Up button at the top right of the page and follow instructions.

The 2016 Saskatchewan Open concluded yesterday with Thomas King becoming the new provincial champion. Thomas defeated Noah Wernikowski 3-1 in the final match.

The registration for the 2016 Saskatchewan Open squash tournament, Mar. 18-20, at Gold's Gym Regina South, is now open -

Entry fee is $60, with a $25 fee for Junior Novice entrants. The entry deadline is Monday, Mar. 14.

As this is our provincial squash championship, we hope that all Saskatchewan Squash players and families can participate. We also welcome players from Alberta, Manitoba and elsewhere. It should be fun.

Special Meeting of Saskatchewan Squash called...

February 5, 2016

Notice is hereby given of a Special Meeting of the membership of Saskatchewan Squash Inc. on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, 12noon, at the YMCA Saskatoon, Court 3. This meeting is being held during our upcoming Saskatoon Open tournament, Feb. 26-28, in the hopes of getting enough people together to reach quorum - 25 Saskatchewan Squash members.

The sole purpose of this Special Meeting is to pass a motion to adopt the proposed new constitution and by-laws as per the attached document.

Our current combination of constitution and by-laws is incomplete, mixed in with our policies and procedures, and didn't meet many of the requirements of the Not-For-Profit Act as well as our major funder, Sask Sport. An update and revision is necessary.

Thanks to the work of Noah Wernikowski, Diana Lee and our Sask Squash Board we have a document that will guide our association for years to come.

Chris Martin named Coach of Canada Winter Games Team Saskatchewan for 2019

Congratulations to Regina's Chris Martin on being named the Squash Coach for Team Saskatchewan for the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta.

As one of our most experienced coaches, Chris will develop a four-year program to train many candidates and then select eight of our best juniors to compete in 2019.

Saskatchewan Squash is currently seeking an individual to coach our Canada Winter Games team for competition in 2019.   The following criteria will be considered:

• Be certified to the Provincial Coach certification (the old Level 3).  SSI will consider a candidate that has their Intermediate level provided the candidate successfully obtains his/her Provincial Coach certification as soon as reasonably possible.
• Has been or is currently an active squash coach with an accredited program.
• A member in good standing of Saskatchewan Squash.
• Have some knowledge of the CWG process as it relates to the responsibilities below.
• Have demonstrated an enthusiasm for the game and the ability to work collegially in a group setting.
• Resides in Saskatoon or Regina, Saskatchewan.


The coach will be responsible for the following:

• Establishing selection criteria for the CWG team.
• Providing regular training camps in Regina and Saskatoon to develop and assess eligible players.
• Coordinating strength and skill development programs.
• Working with coaches responsible of other junior squash programs to ensure their elite player programs follow the direction and focus of CWG program.
• Setting and overseeing the budget to ensure that all objectives of the CWG Program budget are met.
• Complying with any Saskatchewan Sport requirements, accounting and otherwise.
• Selecting, coaching and travelling with the CWG team.


The choice of the CWG coach will be subject to approval of either the board or the selection committee of SSI.

Squashheads Unite Tournament to return

I'm proud to announce that Squasheads Unite will return this fall, on the weekend of Sept 25. This time, it will be a no-frills, stripped-down tournament. For six of the juniors this was their first out-of-province tournament and their first time playing in their appropriate age division. Team Saskatchewan returns home...

The Saskatchewan squash team returned from the Canada Winter Games today from Prince George, B.C. It was a special experience at the multi-sport games and quite a journey over the last 3+ years. Our province and our association is very proud of our team, as we were well-represented.

The team of men - Thomas King, Mateo Buitrago, Michael Mutschler and Calvin Truong - finished 7th.

The team of women - Emily Bardutz, Clarizze Perpetua, Diandra Gariepy and Sana Rehman - finished 8th.

Many thanks to all the athletes who trained hard, learned so much and gave a great effort.

Many thanks also to the support and commitment of coach Bob Wyma and manager Natasha Meger. The dedication to our sport, our association and to our athletes is greatly appreciated.

Thanks to Jaycee Spagrud, who directly coached many of the athletes, and to Chris Martin, the prior CWG coach, who passed along his experience in many ways to our team. 

The team had tremendous support from the families of the athletes, many of whom made the trip to Prince George to cheer our team on.

This was a wonderful, community effort.

Our 2015 provincial championship, the Saskatchewan Open, is scheduled for Mar. 20-22 at Gold's Gym Regina South.

Nikki Todd is the defending champion. Entrants of all levels of play, including Albertans and Manitobans, are expected. All players are welcome - juniors, masters, male, female, young and not so young, lefties, righties - everyone.

Our Saskatchewan squash team continues to compete in Prince George, B.C. at the 2015 Canada Winter Games today.

Both the men, 3-2 -  and women, 1-3-1 -  finished their round-robin pool play yesterday.

Next up for both teams is Team PEI today to start the crossover draw to determine places 5th through 8th. Our Saskatchewan women's team plays at 9am PST, 11am Saskatchewan time and our men's team plays at 12noon PST, 2pm Saskatchewan time.

'Toon Town Open is open for registration

The 2015 Saskatoon Open is open for registration. It is running from February 20-22 at the Saskatoon YMCA, as per usual. Complete with giveaways, Saturday evening meal, prizes, and a lot of fun, competitive squash, this year looks to be amazing. The only thing missing is you!! Register at:

The bring-a-friend event will allow you to bring a friend who has never played in a Canadian squash tournament or league, and you and your friend will be able to register for only $30. The junior novice event is open to juniors (mostly 12 or under) who are not yet ready to play in a regular mixed division, and only costs $25 to enter.

RBC Learn to Play - Squash program gets funding, and green light.

Two Saskatchewan Coaches achieve Certification

We are proud to announce that Saskatchewan has added two new Provincial Coaches.

Natasha Meger and Bob Wyma, who operate Saskatoon's Bridge City Squash program, have completed all requirements over more than three years of studying and training to become officially certified as Provincial Coaches by Squash Canada and the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).

Bob is our Canada Winter Games Coach and Natasha is our CWG Manager.

Congratulations to them both on a great accomplishment. Thanks for continuing to help our juniors and all our players improve their games and enjoy our sport more.

Nikki Todd Qualifies for Team Canada!

Regina's Nikki Todd, Saskatchewan's provincial champion, won her qualifying pool with a win tonight at the team trials at Toronto's National Squash Academy to successfully qualify for Team Canada who will compete at the 2014 Women's World Team Squash Championship, December, in Toronto.

Nikki becomes the first Saskatchewan player to represent Canada at the World Team Championship. She is also a member of the reigning Canadian Women's Team Squash Champion Saskatchewan team.

Nikki joins Sam Cornett of Ontario and two to-be-determined players on the four-player team.

Saskatoon YMCA Winter Squash League is open for business!!

League officials are pleased to announce that registration for the winter league is underway, and that changes are in the air. Registration will remain open until October 1, 2014. The league will cost $15 for YMCA members, and $79 for non-members (plus tax, for both amounts). We have a limited number of spots available, and players will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

For this league session, all players will be drafted into teams, with the players in the top level being team captains. To encourage all of the teams to play as a group and be available to support one another, you will receive bonus points for playing in the scheduled times. The league will be providing some snacks and or drinks on nights throughout the year to further encourage you to stick around and cheer on/referee your teammates.

All league information will be posted on the Sask Squash website, so keep checking the site to find out what new and exciting developments are coming.

In order to get better acquainted with his wife and son, Russ Warner will not be running the league this winter, so if you have questions or concerns, please send them to Steve Bachiu at, or Dr. James Stephenson at Don't worry, Russ will still be around, and he has offered to help out in a limited capacity.

At Saturday night's dinner, Diana Lee was announced as the Spirit of Squash award winner for this season. Also, Saskatchewan Squash awarded Reed Fitzgerald and Lucas Potgieter with racquets as prizes in a raffle including all tournament entrants.

Our last tournament on the Sask Squash schedule is the SLIC tournament, April 25-27 in Saskatoon, hosted by Russ Warner. Team Saskatchewan, Nikki Todd and Jaycee Spagrud of Regina and Carla Dyck of Saskatoon, clinched the 2014 Canadian Women's Squash Team Championship by defeating Team Quebec this afternoon, 2-1. This is the first national squash championship for any team from Saskatchewan.

After Genevieve Lessard, Quebec's # 3 player, took Carla Dyck, Saskatchewan's # 3 player, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8, to give Quebec a 1-0 lead, Nikki Todd of Regina, Saskatchewan's # 1 player and # 3-ranked player in Canada upset Alexandra Norman, Canada's # 2-ranked player 11-9, 11-5, 11-9 to tie it up at 1 match each. It was then up to Saskatchewan's # 2 player, Jaycee Spagrud, in the deciding match against Quebec's # 2 player, Anne-Christine Lajoie. Lajoie played very strong in the first two very close games, winning them 13-11, 12-10. Spagrud came storming back to secure the match in the next three games, 11-4, 11-8, 11-6 to win for Saskatchewan 2-1 in matches.

The six-team round-robin tournament ends tomorrow at Gold's Gym Regina South, with Saskatchewan, 4-1, playing Ontario, 2-2. Alberta, 3-1, and Quebec, 3-1, finish their round-robin play in a battle for second place. Saskatchewan team 2 faces Manitoba for 5th place.

15 Wing Tournament Date Change

The squash tournament at the 15 Wing AFB Club in Moose Jaw has been changed to Jan. 24 & 25, not as listed on our SSI tournament posters. This tournament is open to everyone and limited to 40 players. Entry details to follow.

Also, please mark your calendar for the 2014 Canadian Women's Team Squash Championship, Jan. 10-12, at Gold's Gym Regina South in Regina. Saskatchewan has two teams competing - Nikki Todd, Jaycee Spagrud and Carla Dyck on Team 1, Shefali Thakore, Neekha Patel and Diana Lee on Team 2.
