Saskatchewan Women's Team Clinches National Title!!!!

Team Saskatchewan, Nikki Todd and Jaycee Spagrud of Regina and Carla Dyck of Saskatoon, clinched the 2014 Canadian Women's Squash Team Championship by defeating Team Quebec this afternoon, 2-1. This is the first national squash championship for any team from Saskatchewan.

After Genevieve Lessard, Quebec's # 3 player, took Carla Dyck, Saskatchewan's # 3 player, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8, to give Quebec a 1-0 lead, Nikki Todd of Regina, Saskatchewan's # 1 player and # 3-ranked player in Canada upset Alexandra Norman, Canada's # 2-ranked player 11-9, 11-5, 11-9 to tie it up at 1 match each. It was then up to Saskatchewan's # 2 player, Jaycee Spagrud, in the deciding match against Quebec's # 2 player, Anne-Christine Lajoie. Lajoie played very strong in the first two very close games, winning them 13-11, 12-10. Spagrud came storming back to secure the match in the next three games, 11-4, 11-8, 11-6 to win for Saskatchewan 2-1 in matches.

The six-team round-robin tournament ends tomorrow at Gold's Gym Regina South, with Saskatchewan, 4-1, playing Ontario, 2-2. Alberta, 3-1, and Quebec, 3-1, finish their round-robin play in a battle for second place. Saskatchewan team 2 faces Manitoba for 5th place.
